Immortality

Mike Mulligan and his steam engine live happily in the basement of a long condemned school. He doesn't know the school closed twenty years ago. He's still there, sitting cross-legged next to his machine, reading the paper and smoking his pipe, content in the oblivion the pages have decreed for him for all eternity as long as paper exists. He should have been etched on clay tablets like at Elba. Then he would last for eternity and cause confusion like other ancient tablets. (taken from the chapbook The Galaxy Guide to Thanatopsia)
